It All Started with a Story.

One cold night at Christmas in Davidson, I had three suitcases of product, three friends, and a desire to help artisans in Kenya. We dumped the products on tables and started sharing the women’s stories. That night, I learned the power of a story—and it changed my life.

Two years later, The Marketplace, a Christian fair trade nonprofit, was born. I had no experience running a store, branding, or marketing. But I stepped into what God called me to do and never looked back.

Over 11 years, I went from dumping products on tables to creating custom displays that reflected our brand. I worked everything from one-day shows to 12-day events, learning how to engage customers and stand out. We grew from the back of a  church to a brick-and-mortar shop, a 30-foot fashion truck, and a thriving online community. I traveled the world designing products, mentoring ministry leaders, and learning the ins and outs of running a sustainable business.

It wasn’t always smooth. When a social media hack wiped out our accounts, it could’ve been the end. But we had built an engaged email community that carried us through. I pivoted more times than I can count, but one thing remained constant: the power of our story and the community that believed in it.
